Uganda: Proposed Legislation Attacks LGBT People and their Defenders
IGLHRC expresses grave concern about ongoing detentions in Uganda based on charges of homosexuality, and calls for the dismissal of a bill that would severely curtail the rights of LGBT people and their defenders. Since March, a number of alarming instances of anti-LGBT persecution in the East African nation of Uganda have seriously eroded the country's already fragile commitment to tolerance and human rights.
Indonesia: Activists Fight To Overturn Oppressive Law in Aceh
On September 14, 2009, the province of Aceh in Indonesia, which has an autonomous regional government, passed a local ordinance calling for death by stoning for adultery committed by married heterosexual people, eight-and-a-half years in prison and 100 lashes of the cane for premarital sex or homosexuality, 400 lashings for child rape, and 60 lashings for gambling. Indonesian LGBT groups are working with Acehnese human rights organizations and IGLHRC to repeal or revise this ordinance.
Scant Justice in South African Murder Case; Courts Must Value Lesbian Lives!
IGLHRC is disappointed at yesterday's verdict from a court in Delmas, South Africa, convicting only one of three men on trial for the murder of South African lesbian Eudy Simelane. The body of 31-year old Simelane, a soccer player on South Africa's national women's team, was found in a field in KwaThema township outside Johannesburg in April 2008. She had been gang-raped and died from multiple stab wounds.
India: Government Defers Decision on 377 to Supreme Court
The government of India decided on September 17, 2009 that it will not oppose the Delhi High Court verdict on Section 377 of the Penal Code, which decriminalizes homosexuality by "reading down" the section pertaining to same-sex relations between consenting adults in private. Indian activists are praising this decision as a symbol of tacit support for decriminalization in this landmark case.
Argentina: Action Alert – Demand Investigation Into Attacks on Transgender Man in La Matanza
Ian Breppe was physically and verbally attacked on July 19, 2008 and April 10, 2009 because of his gender identity. When he reported the incidents to the authorities both times he was mocked or ignored. These threats and violence against Ian are indicators of systemic violence against trans people in La Matanza and in various towns in the Province of Buenos Aires.
